Research Emphasis

My research program focuses on designing innovative decarbonization platforms, electro-bioproduction routes for fuels, chemicals, and materials, and persistent organic pollutant removal methods, all of which are pertinent to the challenges in our environments. The scientific principle of my program lies in synergizing the strengths of chemical and biological systems to build integrated processes. My research also simulates or leverages environmentally friendly natural bioprocesses yet strengthens them with engineered chemicals and materials to achieve higher efficiency, unique capacity, and sometimes valorization. I also work on other topics such as bioproduction from other carbon waste (i.e., lignocellulosic biomass and others) and remediation of other emerging contaminants.

Research Interests

  • Biological and materials engineering
  • Contaminant remediation
  • Carbon waste conversion
  • Synthetic biology and metabolic engineering
