Research Emphasis

My research focuses on livestock immunology with an emphasis on understanding the contribution of innate T cells to immunity against influenza viruses and other pathogens important for swine and human health. In this pursuit, I work with MU’s National Swine Research and Resource Center to produce pigs genetically lacking different subsets of T and B cells to understand their contribution to mucosal immune responses. I am also heavily invested in single cell transcriptomics technology which is extremely powerful for identifying types and subtypes of cells as well as regulatory networks that affect cell function. This platform offers tremendous opportunities to understand immune responses in livestock species for which relatively few immune reagents are available. In addition to his work in livestock immunology, I has > 15 years of T1D research experience with a focus on identifying and characterizing genes involved in autoreactive T cell development. I recently identified mouse mammary tumor provirus 3 as an underlying T1D resistance gene in the T1D susceptible NOD mouse, the primary animal model for studying human T1D.
